How To Care For Your Carpet

​Investing in a fine carpet adds warmth, acoustic comfort, and effortless luxury to your home. To ensure your Stanley Flooring carpet maintains its showroom texture, deep colour, and resilience for years to come, regular routine maintenance and prompt care are key.

1. Preventive Care: Stopping Dirt at the Door

The primary cause of premature carpet wear is abrasive soil particles (sand, grit, and outdoor dirt) getting worked into the pile, where they act like tiny blades cutting away at the fibres.

  • Barrier Mats: Place large, high-quality entrance mats at all exterior doorways to trap dirt and moisture before it reaches your living spaces. Clean or vacuum mats regularly.

  • Remove Shoes: Adopting a shoe-free house policy drastically reduces fibre crushing and outdoor contamination.

  • Positioning Light Colours: Avoid installing delicate or off-white shades directly against heavy exterior access points​​​​

Vacuuming Guidelines by Pile Type

Pro Tip: Vacuum slowly in smooth, deliberate passes. Accelerating too quickly fails to lift embedded dirt and puts unnecessary tension on carpet tufts.

Emergency Stain Removal Protocol

 

Accidents happen. The secret to preventing a permanent stain is acting immediately.

​

 

1. Scrape semi-solids first: Immediate action.

If the spill includes food or semi-solids, gently remove excess material using a plastic spatula or the edge of a blunt knife before applying liquids.

​

2. Blot — NEVER rub: Prevents fibre distortion.

Using clean white kitchen roll or a white cotton cloth, gently press down to absorb free liquid. Do not scrub or rub vigorously, as this twists the carpet pile and spreads the stain wider.

​

3. Treat from outside-in: Prevents spreading.

Dampen a clean cloth with lukewarm water (or an approved cleaner) and work from the outer edges of the stain toward the center. This stops the perimeter from expanding.

​

4. Apply fibre-specific cleaning solution: Check material type.

Use the correct formula depending on whether your carpet is synthetic or natural wool:

  • Polypropylene / Stain-Resistant Carpets: Safe for a diluted bleach solution (1 part household bleach to 10 parts warm water). Always spot-test on a hidden area first.

  • 100% Wool & Wool-Rich Blends: NEVER use bleach or harsh detergents. Use only WoolSafe-approved spot cleaners and gently dab with a dry cloth.

5.Dry thoroughly: Final step.

Press a dry white towel over the cleaned patch with slight weight to extract residual moisture. Never over-saturate your carpet during cleaning.

 

   Understanding Natural Carpet Characteristics

It is completely normal for a new carpet to display certain physical traits as it settles in:

​

  • Shedding: New cut-pile carpets made from spun yarn will shed short loose fibres during initial vacuuming. This is a normal manufacturing characteristic, not a flaw.

  • Shading & Pile Reversal: Light reflecting off fibres leaning in different directions can give areas of heavy foot traffic a slightly lighter or darker appearance.

  • Snags / Stray Tufts: If a long tuft extends above the pile surface, never pull it. Carefully cut it level with surrounding fibres using sharp scissors.

  • Furniture Indentations: Heavy furniture feet leave impressions. Regularly shifting furniture slightly and gently teasing the pile with a blunt coin will help tufts bounce back.
