Choosing Underlay For Your Carpet

Choosing an underlay when buying a new carpet can be incredibly confusing. One flooring company might charge more for an 8mm underlay than another charges for a 12mm option, so naturally, you might pick the 12mm because it seems better on paper. However, thickness is only a small part of the story.
To find the right support for your carpet, you need to consider five main factors:
Thickness: The most obvious factor, but it must be balanced with density.
Density: How tightly packed the material is. Low density means the underlay will flatten quickly under your feet.
Compression & Retention: The rate at which an underlay bounces back, and how much total thickness it loses after years of consistent foot traffic.
TOG (Thermal Insulation): The amount of warmth the underlay traps in the room.
Sound Insulation: The underlay's ability to dampen impact noise between floors (measured in decibels).
There are many incredibly cheap underlays on the market. In fact, the quality of some budget options is so poor that simply rolling them out across a room can cause them to tear apart in your hands. If an underlay degrades that easily during installation, it will rapidly disintegrate into dust under heavy foot traffic, leaving your carpet loose, wrinkled, and unsupported.
The Specification Showdown: Premium vs. Wholesale Budget
Below, we compare Wilsons Plushwalk 10mm (our go-to premium underlay) against a standard Wholesale 10mm underlay. While the wholesale version isn't the worst budget option on the market, it is one of the few lower-end products that actually provides an official data sheet so we can compare the exact specifications side-by-side:
Technical Metric | Wilsons Plushwalk 10mm | Wholesale 10mm |
Material Composition | Viscoelastic Memory Foam Blend | Standard Recycled PU Foam Chips |
Product Density | 105 kg/m³ | 75 kg/m³ |
Roll Weight (15m²) | 16.0 kg | 11.3 kg |
Impact Sound Index | 45 dB (Superior dampening) | 41 dB (Standard protection) |
Thermal Insulation | 3.2 TOG (High insulation) | 2.8 TOG (Moderate insulation) |
Compression Recovery | 92% Lifespan Thickness Recovery | ~75% Lifespan Thickness Recovery |
Traffic Suitability | Heavy Domestic / Luxury Use | Medium to Low Wear Only |
Moisture/Spill Barrier | Yes (Integrated DPM Layer) | No (Standard mesh backing) |
Best Suited For | Stairs, Hallways, Main Living Rooms | Bedrooms, Guest Rooms, Home Offices |
Why Density and Materials Matter
As the data shows, Wilsons wins on every single metric. Because it uses a advanced memory foam blend, it recovers an incredible 92% of its original thickness over its lifespan, ensuring your carpet feels plush for years to come. It also features an integrated Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) layer to protect your floor from unexpected spills.
However, a luxury 10mm underlay isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. For instance, it isn't suitable for a home office layout. In a workspace, heavy rolling castor wheels will squash straight through soft memory foam, stretching out the carpet backing and causing ugly, permanent ripples.
For home offices or commercial spaces, you want a thinner underlay with an exceptionally high density. That's where Wilsons Toughstep comes in. Available in 7mm or 9mm thicknesses, it boasts a massive density rating of 165 kg/m³, making it ideal for high-traffic workspaces using low-profile, office-appropriate carpets.

The Stanley Flooring Difference: Installing thick, premium underlays requires the right trade techniques. Using standard 6mm carpet grippers with a 12mm underlay causes the carpet to "dive down" sharply at the skirting boards, preventing the pins from holding it tightly. To ensure your flooring stays perfectly taut and never wrinkles, we automatically upgrade our installations to wider, heavy-duty 9mm grippers whenever a premium underlay is selected.
We always aim to supply the most suitable materials for the job—not just what yields the highest profit margins. Our goal is to maximize the lifespan, comfort, and performance of your investment.
