Like most things in professional flooring installation, the honest answer is: it depends. Carpet gripper isn't a one-size-fits-all product. It comes in several distinct variations engineered for specific types of carpet backings and underlay thicknesses:

• Long Pin: These longer spikes are specifically designed for exceptionally thick carpets, or carpets with rigid backings that won't easily hook onto standard lengths.

• Medium Pin: The industry standard used by most fitters. It provides reliable grip for the vast majority of mid-to-top range carpets.

• Short Pin: Essential for very thin, delicate floorings like Herringbone loops or low-profile pile carpets where standard pins would poke through the surface and pierce your feet.

Understanding Deep Base Options (e.g., Floorwise XL9)

It isn't just the pin length that matters—the actual thickness of the wooden gripper base plays a massive role in how your floor performs.

Standard carpet gripper features a 6mm deep plywood base. However, premium installations often require a deep-base alternative, such as Floorwise XL9, which features a 9mm deep base.

We automatically opt for a 9mm base whenever a customer chooses a premium, luxury 11mm or 12mm underlay. If you pair a thick 12mm underlay with standard 6mm grippers, the underlay will sit a noticeable 6mm higher than the wooden edge strip. This massive height difference forces the carpet to dive down at a sharp angle, drastically reducing how securely the backing can hook onto the spikes.

Over time, this mismatch causes the carpet to pull away from the walls, lose its tension, create ugly ripples, and wear out exponentially faster.

Aside from matching pin sizes to your specific carpet choice, the single biggest reason we find ourselves completely replacing old grippers comes down to poor workmanship from historical installations.

An alarming 90% of the jobs we measure have existing carpet grippers that were installed incredibly poorly. They are frequently fitted much too far from the skirting boards, or they fail to properly follow the contour of the walls.

If an installation does not meet official British Standards (BS 5325) for textile floor coverings, carpet manufacturers have the legal right to completely deny any warranty claim you make if your carpet fails early.
